And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the LORD throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever. Exodus 12:14
I have heard preachers say that the Passover supper where the Lord Jesus instituted the Lord’s Supper was the last Passover that God recognized. Those preachers must have missed Exodus 12, because at least three times in this chapter the Israelites were told to keep the Passover memorial for ever. And for ever did not end at the Last Supper. The Lord’s Supper, which is critical to us as Christians, did not replace the Passover as some teach. The two memorials simply apply to different audiences. The distinction between the Lord’s people the Israelites and the Lord’s people the Christians is important.
The golden rule of Bible interpretation states: ‘When the plain sense of Scripture makes common sense, seek no other sense’. Most of the false teaching we encounter is because somebody read something into a Bible passage that veered from the plain sense of the passage. Cults do this regularly. Unfortunately, so do some real believers, who create confusion. Examples are the so-called gap theory of creation, and the doctrine of household baptism, where babies are ‘baptized’ based on the faith of their parents. And some Christians falsely teach that Christians have replaced the Jews in God’s program of the ages. The Bible clearly teaches otherwise.
Jewish people today celebrate the Passover, because it is a memorial of an event worth remembering. Christians eat the Lord’s Supper, because it is a memorial of an event worth remembering. As individuals, we remember our physical birthdays every year, and we ought to also remember our spiritual birthdays too, as memorials of events worth remembering. Wedding anniversaries are important. So are other great milestones in our lives.
Deliverance from Egypt was so important to the Israelites that they remember it forever. What events are that important to us? Never forget! -Jim MacIntosh
