Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to slay Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and dwelt in the land of Midian: and he sat down by a well. Exodus 2:15
What a comedown! One day, Moses is one of the most powerful princes in Egypt; the next day he is a fugitive with a death sentence on his head. In just a few short days, he goes from wearing the luxurious robes of an Egyptian prince to wearing the ragged coat of a Midian shepherd. How did Moses feel about his dramatic change of circumstances? We are not told. But we do know that this was all part of God’s purposes for Moses and for the children of Israel.
You and I will never rise to the heights that Moses had known in Egypt, nor will we ever have to flee from the rage of an offended Pharaoh. But our Lord had some changes in mind for us when He reached us in salvation. Our unconverted state was of no use to Him. Before we could be a good testimony, we had to shed many of our wrong habits, clean up our speech, and abandon many of our old friends and haunts. Before we could be of service to our Lord, we had to learn His Word, love His people, and lay aside our own plans and ambitions. Not as dramatic as Moses’ experience, but just as necessary.
We are told that the 40 years Moses spent tending Jethro’s flocks were necessary to purge his heart from the 40 years of learning Egypt’s ways. Surely it will not take so long for us to leave behind the trappings of our old life. But it will take us the rest of our days to live out God’s purposes for our lives. After God’s call to Moses in the burning bush, he had another 40 years to serve the God Who called him. How long do we have? -Jim MacIntosh
