And the king of Egypt spake to the Hebrew midwives, of which the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah. Exodus 1:15
Last year in Canada, some 410,000 babies were born. In the same year, more than 101,000 abortions were performed. Almost a fifth of Canadian children are exterminated every year, a gruesome reminder of the barbaric nature of our modern society. Reasons (excuses) for those abortions vary, but in most cases the arrival of a baby would be inconvenient for the parents. Inconvenience is the same reason why the king of Egypt wanted to talk to the Hebrew midwives named in our text.
The king reasoned that if he could eliminate the birth of Hebrew baby boys, he could eliminate the threat of the children of Israel taking over his kingdom. So he told Shiphrah and Puah to kill the boys when they were born. It didn’t work, because Shiphrah and Puah feared God and ‘saved the men children alive’. And God blessed the faithful midwives. giving them houses. And the children of Israel multiplied even more. The example of those midwives should not be lost on us today, because the world and the devil have many sinful tasks that they want Christians to do for them. No Christian should ever give any support to the slaughter of the unborn, nor endorse the euthanasia of the sick, no matter how ‘convenient’. Dishonest business dealings are never right, regardless of how ‘convenient’. Also wrong is the unfair treatment of anyone for our convenience.
It may take some time, and it may not happen even in our lifetime, but God’s blessing and reward is assured on all those who do what is right. – Jim MacIntosh
