Thought for Thursday

That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God. Colossians 1:10

When I was in grade 9 in school, I signed up for the school’s air force cadet program. Every Tuesday, dressed in our blue uniforms, we spent an hour working on marching drills and other military parade exercises. For some reason, I found it difficult to perform most of the procedures. So when the leaders chose a group of cadets to perform a demonstration for the air force officials during our closing exercises, I was not the least bit surprised to be left off the list. As I watched the demonstration team snap crisply through their drills, I shuddered to think of how much a mess it would be if I had been on the team. I would have disgraced the school. My military walk was not worthy of being placed on display. What about our Christian walk, is it worthy of the One who has called us?

Distractions mean nothing to a well-disciplined soldier during drills. A barking dog, a fellow soldier stumbling, a mispronounced command from the drill sergeant do not disrupt his rhythm or prevent him from completing the drill. The Christian must also deal with distractions in our walk for the Lord. Life throws all types of distractions that would tend to lead us into sin, neglect of the Word, or missing Assembly meetings, and yet, walking worthy means letting none of these things deviate our path from obedience to the Word of God.

Weariness is also an enemy of the soldier on parade. He must be in peak physical condition, and he must know how to press on when exhausted. So too the Christian must keep spiritually fit with prayer and reading, and the company of fellow believers. And when the going gets rough, we must learn to hold on to the truth even when we face adversity or betrayal.

Well-trained soldiers performing their drills are a delight to watch. So too, well-ordered Christians faithfully obeying their Lord are well pleasing to Him. -Jim MacIntosh
