He shall see of the travail of His soul, and shall be satisfied. By His knowledge shall My righteous Servant justify many, for He shall bear their iniquities. Isaiah 53:11
A certain man was scheduled to appear in court on a certain day to face a criminal charge against him. But when the court was convened, the man was not present. Instead, the man’s son stood up and informed the judge that there were 23 reasons why his father was unable to appear. The judge, angry at the man’s lack of appearance, demanded to know what those 23 reasons were. The son told him that the first reason was that his father had died about three weeks earlier. The judge thought a moment and informed the son, ‘The first reason is sufficient, there is no need to hear the remaining 22. Case dismissed’. Just as Reason 1 satisfied all of the court’s requirements, so too there is a sacrifice that fully satisfies Almighty God when it comes to the matter of our sins. We have no idea whether the man facing charges would have been able to clear himself had he appeared in court. But we do know that there is no possibility that you and I could ever have cleared ourselves of our record of lawlessness, disobedience, and rebellion. But there is One Who could, and Who did.
The reason that God is satisfied with the offering of His Son on the cross is simply that when Christ died for our sins, He died for them all. There was nothing left for any other sacrifice to cover. Even the sacrifices of the Old Testament did not pay for sins, they merely placed them under the value of the one great sacrifice that was to be made for sins forever. God could be no less than satisfied. His Son completed the work of redemption by leaving nothing unresolved. The blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanseth us from ALL sin.
Our remembrances of our Lord are possible only because of God’s satisfaction with the offering of His son. How sweet to be able to gather and unitedly remind God how satisfied we also are with Him. -Jim MacIntosh
