Word for Wednesday

And He called unto Him His disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, that this poor widow hath case more in than all they which have case into the treasury. Mark 12:43

Two mites would not go far, even in those days. The Lord told the disciples that the pittance was all the poor widow had. He could see into not only her heart, but also her purse. He knew her circumstances, and that she was doubtless in for a scanty supper.

We have heard of the many millions that Bill Gates is donating to his favourite charities, and we certainly hope that some of that money will do some good. Truly, we appreciate Mr. Gates’ generosity. But this poor widow in Mark 12 gave far more than Bill Gates. She emptied her tiny pocketbook of all that it contained. At last report, Mr. Gates’ bank account still has many billions of dollars in it.

Do you give to the Lord? I don’t mean just money, either. What about your talents and your time? Is there more you can do with your abilities to help the helpless, to further the Gospel, to encourage the saints? Yes, we are all busy these days, but is there not a bit more time you could contribute? Perhaps something that you do to help or please yourself could be set aside or turned into something to toss into the Lord’s treasury.

This poor widow had her priorities straight, even though she was about to suffer for her giving. Do we know anything about the pain of giving what we should?

Did the Lord see to it that this woman received some immediate recompense for what she had given? We are not told. But we know that her eternal reward will be far more than yours and mine. She has set for us a lovely example. – Jim MacIntosh
