I beseech thee for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten in my bonds. Philemon 10
Paul and Onesimus made a great team! Onesimus was devoted not only to his Lord but also to the preacher who had brought the Gospel to him. Paul was deeply thankful for the energy and devotion of his young friend, and full of joy at the spiritual growth and the spirituality of Onesimus. There is a very special bond between older Christians and younger Christians who are taken under the wing of the older. Going far beyond deep friendships, these partnerships are often a wonderful reminder of the unity into which Christ has brought us.
If you are a younger Christian, do you have an older Saint on whom you draw support and encouragement? If not, take a look around your Assembly and find such a mentor and friend. Spend time learning about the older Christian and discussing the Scriptures with him/her. Soak up all the experience you can, knowing that some of the mistakes and observations that the older Christian has encountered can be extremely valuable for you.
If you are an older Christian, is there a younger child of God who you can take under your wing to enjoy the things of the Lord with? Cast your eye about the circle and consider who you could be a help and friend to. You can gain much from the freshness of youth, the energy, the joy of Salvation. There is so much to appreciate about a young Christian that will give comfort and encouragement to your own soul.
Paul and Onesimus made a very special team. They also make a very powerful example. In God’s Assembly, we have many wonderful opportunities for such partnerships to flourish. Do not hinder the Holy Spirit from developing these relationships. – Jim MacIntosh
