Did you know that the Flat Earth Society is still in existence? Not only is it going strong, but its growing numbers of adherents react with indignity and scorn at those of us who know better. Although we wonder at how they can take themselves seriously, they continue to reject as hoaxes all of the first-hand proof of a round planet Earth as a member of our solar system. They continue to publish material and present information on their website that provides arguments in favour of their fanciful theory. Regardless of whether they actually believe that the earth is flat, and regardless of the fact that none of the real experts anywhere believe the earth is flat, there may be a few gullible folks who read the material from the Society and be caused to wonder or doubt a bit. We smile at such gullibility in the face of such overwhelming evidence to the contrary. But do we also smile at the gullibility of those who believe in the foolishness of evolution in the face of such overwhelming evidence to the contrary?
Our text reminds us that people have no excuse for failing to believe in a God Who has made Himself so evident and obvious. Well-known atheists have been beating their drums lately, pushing their misinformation and lack of true knowledge on an unsuspecting public. Pretending themselves to be wise, they display their foolishness by ignoring the two great sources of proof that God has given to us. Those great sources of proof are the Word of God and creation. The honest reader of the Word of God and the honest student of creation must come to the conclusion that God is, and that God can be known. Unfortunately, those who seek to disprove God begin with their own false assumptions and ignore the proofs that God has provided. And in doing so, they lead astray the gullible people who accept the word of those they believe to be experts. And those false experts will be held to account for all those they have deceived. Let us not be among them.
The Bible is its own best defender. The Word of God reveals God, and unfolds God’s will and purposes. Those who seek to learn if God is and what He is like must read the Word of God. That is why Christians must study the Word, to become better acquainted with our God. In the same way, those who would know God better must explore His creation, to find out how He has used patterns far beyond our understanding to establish all that which we can see and hear, and feel and smell and taste all around us. Such great design requires a great Designer. There are some Christians who believe the lie that God originally created the earth billions of years ago and then left it to evolve into what we know today. Apart from being scientifically impossible, this theory denies the power and planning of God and seeks to find accommodation with the evolutionists who deny that God is involved.
