Stand therefore having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness. Ephesians 6:14
All parts of a Roman soldier’s armour were important, but two were extremely important to enabling the soldier to remain in battle when under attack. The belt that encircled the soldier’s waist had two purposes: to hold the scabbard that held the sword, and to protect the lower portion of the soldier’s body. The breastplate protected the part of the body that has the vital organs, diverting the arrows and spears that would otherwise prove fatal. For the Christians engaged in our warfare, we need to have a belt of truth, and a breastplate of righteousness, if we are to survive.
The belt of truth reminds us that we need to tell and live the truth if we are to have a faithful witness for Christ. Just as the belt held the scabbard for the Roman soldier, so the truth enables the Christian to use the Word of God. The Bible condemns lying as the product of the devil, and no Christian should be a liar. It is a poor testimony to be known as someone whose word is unreliable. Just as the belt preserved the soldier’s lower body from injury, so the belt of truth protects Christians from scandal and false accusations, and from falling victim to retelling the devil’s lies and half-truths. We need the belt of truth. Without it, we are unprepared for the fight.
We also need the breastplate of righteousness. But what is it? Without a breastplate, a Roman soldier would be in great peril at all times, because any attack could instantly become fatal. A sturdy breastplate would render the very same attacks ineffective and useless, because the enemy’s blows would glance harmlessly off the armour. Righteousness offers the same protection for the Christian. Obviously, we are talking about God’s righteousness, because our righteousnesses are as filthy rags (Isaiah 64.6). Such Scriptures as Job 36:3, Psalm 5:8, 23:3, 24:5, and 71:16 remind us that true righteousness comes from God. It is God’s righteousness, and not our own, that must serve as our breastplate and defense against Satan. God’s righteousness means obedience to His Word. Through a continuing and dedicated adherence to both the letter and spirit of the Word of God, we can defend ourselves with His righteousness.
How wonderful of God to provide the armour to enable us to be victorious in our lives for Him. How thankful we should be for the belt of truth and the breastplate of righteousness! -Jim MacIntosh
