Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified. Matthew 27:22
What a question! Countless Gospel messages have been based on these eleven words uttered by Pontius Pilate. And countless people, like Pilate, responded to this all important question with the wrong answer, to their eternal loss. But today, we recognize that our loving God has also answered this great question, with the same answer, to our eternal blessing.
Yes, it was in envy and in rejection that the Jewish leaders and the fickle crowd demanded that Jesus be crucified. And it was in moral cowardice and political expediency that Pilate consented to the crucifixion. Their motives for the crucifixion could not have been more wrong. And they have had almost two thousand years of torment to regret that greatest of all wrongs. And in those two thousand years, millions of sinners like us have come to appreciate that God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son.
Remember our Saviour’s words from the darkness of Golgotha: ‘My God, My God, Why hast Thou forsaken Me?’ Matthew 27:46. What was the greatest proof of mankind’s rejection of Christ was also God’s greatest manifestation of His love for mankind. Rome’s worst ever act of perverted justice was also Heaven’s greatest ever act of providing justification for us.
It was God’s eternal purpose that Jesus which is called Christ should be crucified. -Jim MacIntosh
