But the Lord is faithful, who shall stablish you, and keep you from evil. 2 Thessalonians 3:3
The only reason you and I are able and willing to gather in worship today is the faithfulness of our God. Without His faithfulness, we would have neither the strength nor the desire to be obedient to our Saviour’s call for us to remember His death until He come.
Our text tells us that the Lord will stablish, or strengthen, us. That’s good because we have no strength of our own. In fact, we had to confess our lack of strength before we could be saved. And it is only in His strength that we can live as Christians. ‘Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might’ – Ephesians 6:10. And it is in His strength that we can accomplish whatever He desires of us. ‘I can do all things through Christ which strengthened me’ – Philippians 4:13.
The same Lord Who saved us from the penalty of our sin is the Lord who saves us every day, including our times of fellowship and worship, from the effects of the sin we encounter. Our text says He will keep us from evil. Most modern-language versions of the Bible wrongly render this as ‘keep us from the evil one’, that is, the devil. But the word ‘one’ is not in the original Greek. While it is true that the Lord will keep us from the evil one, it is also true that He also keeps us from our other powerful enemies – the world and the flesh. He keeps us from all evil. Because He is faithful. -Jim MacIntosh
