That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand. 2 Thessalonians 2:2
During a recent family discussion, someone spoke of the current explosion of artificial intelligence, and wondered if AI would be the tool that the antichrist would use to dominate the world in the period leading to the great tribulation. But she agreed with me that people have speculated the same as each new technology came along. She mention such things as television, the bar code, and other developments such as the emergence of the European Union. Will these be ways and means for the antichrist’s campaign? I know some Christians who refuse to use certain technologies for fear they will be ensnared by the man of sin. Are these concerns valid?
Paul is writing his second letter to the Thessalonians because they had received a fake letter, supposedly from him, claiming that the day of Christ – the great tribulation – was already occurring. In today’s text, Paul reminds the Christians to relax because certain things must happen before that awful event. In the next verse, he speaks of a falling away, and of the revelation of the man of sin, the antichrist. While we could argue that we are in the midst of a great falling away today, the man of sin has not yet been revealed. And he won’t be until after the Rapture.
We don’t have that fake letter that troubled the Thessalonians. But we do have those around us trying to shake our faith by denying the truth of the rapture, and claiming we are already moving into the tribulation period. As Paul reminded the Thessalonians, we must not let these lies trouble us or rob us of the wonderful hope we have in Christ. -Jim MacIntosh
