Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you. 2 Thessalonians 1:6
As the great patriarch Abraham spoke with his heavenly visitors about the impending judgment on Sodom and Gomorrah, he asked a very important question as he pleaded for the lives of any righteous people in those sinful cities: ‘Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?’ Genesis 18:25. He received a promise that the cities would be spared if ten righteous were found there. The next morning, as Abraham stood and watched as the smoke of destruction rose as a furnace, he knew that ten righteous had not been found. And he sadly accepted that the Judge of all the earth had done right. Our text reminds us that the same Judge will do right in our day too.
In the previous two verses, Paul speaks of the persecutions and tribulations and sufferings of the saints in Thessaloniki. Many thousands of Christians today are still enduring persecutions and tribulations and sufferings, although not so much in our safe (for now) part of the world. The Judge of all the earth is fully aware of how much His people are enduring and has promised rich rewards for it all. The same Judge also promises tribulation on those who inflict the persecutions and tribulations and suffering on Hs own.
Just as the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23), so the recompense – or wages – of troubling God’s people is tribulation. When does this tribulation occur? Stories abound of persecutors of Christians afflicted with terrible diseases, deep disgrace, and heavy losses. But it is not in time where the full recompense occurs; an eternity of tribulation awaits them all. A righteous God will make sure of that. -Jim MacIntosh
