How well I remember how Doug MacLeod used to struggle to his feet and lead us in worship on a Lord’s Day morning. Doug is one of the first people to come to my mind when reading today’s text, because, although he is asleep in Jesus, we will be reunited at our Lord’s return for His saints. I still miss that dear old brother, among other dear ones I knew who now sleep in Jesus. You probably have dear folks like that too, who you are missing as we meet to remember the Lord today.
The certainty of our reunion with those who sleep in Jesus is just as certain as our belief that the Lord Jesus died and rose again. And that is why when we meet to worship the Lord in the eating of His supper, we can do so in the precious reality that it is only until He comes. That is why, even though we are remembering the sorrow of our Saviour’s death, we are also remembering the joy of His glorious resurrection, and we are also anticipating the joy of a glad reunion with our Lord and with those who sleep in Him.
