And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it. Exodus 12:7
It’s one of the very best Gospel applications in our Bible. The story of the Passover lamb makes it into every Gospel series ever preached; it is told and retold in countless Sunday school lessons, and has been illustrated in hundreds of Gospel tracts and books and publications of all kinds. References have been made to it in many Gospel songs and choruses. All because this wonderful account so beautifully presents the sacrifice of the Lamb of God and the need to have the blood of the Lamb applied if we are to be saved. As precious as this story is in its Gospel application, we can also make a precious application of it for Christians.
The death angel stalked the land of Egypt that fateful night, making no distinction between Egyptians or Hebrews. Although the Israelites were spared the horrors of the first nine plagues, they were not exempt from the final plague. Only the application of that Passover lamb blood to their door posts could save their firstborn. Today, God marks all of those who are washed in the blood of His Son. Within each believer dwells the Holy Spirit as the earnest, or guarantee of our eternal relationship with Christ. Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are His – 2 Timothy 2:19.
The seal of the Holy Spirit protects and preserves us. And not just from the judgment for sin. Angels guard us continually, keeping us from all manner of harm in ways we never know. The Spirit guides and instructs us as we keep ourselves open to His leading. We are showered with rich blessings that the world cannot share. All because of the power of the Blood that is applied. -Jim MacIntosh
