And Moses said thou hast spoken well, I will see thy face no more. Exodus 10:29
When Pharaoh told Moses that he would never see his face again, he said it in anger and rejection and a promise to kill him. In our text, Moses grimly and simply agrees that he and Pharaoh would never speak face-to-face again. For several weeks, Moses and Aaron had spoken with Pharaoh about letting the children of Israel depart from Egypt. Through the ordeals of the first nine plagues, they met frequently. But there was a tenth plague coming: the death of the firstborn. Pharaoh knew nothing about it, and it’s uncertain at this point how much Moses knew. But Moses knew that the time was up. Pharaoh’s judgement was due and Israel’s deliverance was imminent. Much like today, really.
If the Rapture were to occur tomorrow – and we know of no reason why it couldn’t – you will have your final conversation today with most of the people you encounter and speak to today. Neither of you will know it. But it will be real. Family members, neighbours, people you do business with, casual acquaintances, or whoever, if they are not saved, will have uttered the last words you will ever hear from them. Your eyes will never again meet theirs, and even their memory will be forever erased from your mind. It’s sobering to consider that our eternal deliverance at the Rapture will be their eternal consignment to judgment.
Moses had repeatedly warned Pharaoh, and proved the reality of God’s anger through the nine plagues. But the time of warnings had come to an end. Pharaoh had exhausted God’s patience. What about today? How much longer will God extend grace to our world? Our own country has just made it illegal to quote our Bibles. So the trump of God is very near. The urgency of the Gospel and of our testimonies is paramount.
Look at those around you whose faces you will see no more at the Lord’s coming, and pray for them. -Jim MacIntosh
