And he that regarded not the Word of the Lord left his servants and his cattle in the field. Exodus 9:21
More than 4.5 million Canadians are cigarette smokers, about 15% of the population. That’s despite the government spending more than $68 million annually trying to convince and assist people to quit smoking, and trying to convince teenagers not to take up the filthy habit. About a third of the country’s construction workers are smokers; between one-quarter and one-half of those in the homosexual community are smokers, and young men tend to smoke more than young women. All of those people have to be aware of the health dangers and financial waste of this disgusting activity. But they choose to ignore the warnings. Like the Egyptians ignored the warnings about the plague of hail that God brought on them.
With the plague of hail, God offered the Egyptians a chance of safety. If the workers and animals stayed under cover during the storm, they would live; if they stayed in the field, they died. We are not told how many Egyptians sought safety, but we know many died. Just like many smokers die because they ignore the warnings. Ignoring the warnings kill many others these days, including excessive speed and texting on the highways, eating unhealthy foods, and believing that vaping is safer than smoking. Even Christians suffer when we ignore the warnings in the Scriptures.
Many young Christians make shipwreck by choosing unsaved companions and partners. Others lose out on victorious living by ignoring Bible reading and prayer. Yet others suffer loss of testimony by going places that the Word warns against. There is a price – often a heavy price – to pay for not heeding God’s warnings. And we can’t blame God for the calamities that we bring on ourselves by not regarding the Word of the Lord. -Jim MacIntosh
