God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets. Hebrews 1:1
Who wrote the book of Hebrews? Not everybody believes, as I do, that Paul wrote this book. And they have their reasons, some of them good. But if the human author is uncertain, the divine author is not. No one can honestly examine this wonderful book and fail to see the hand of the Holy Spirit guiding the author’s pen. We often say and hear said that the entire Bible is about the Lord Jesus Christ. This truth is magnified in the book of Hebrews. In fact, this book goes to great lengths to declare the superiority of Christ.
The writer of Hebrews is concerned that some of the Jewish Christians are slipping back into the practices and ideas of the Jewish religion that they had left when they were first saved. So he (or she – some people actually believe Priscilla may have written or helped to write Hebrews) carefully sets before those Jewish believers the many ways in which their newfound faith in Jesus Christ is so much superior to Judaism.
No other New Testament book contains so many references to the Old Testament. That’s because the writer takes his audience into the rudiments of Jewry and then explains how those Old Testament ordinances and offerings were just the shadows and pictures of the Christ Who was to come. Hebrews explains Christ’s superiority over the prophets as God’s messenger, Christ’s superiority over the Aaronic priesthood, Christ’s superiority over the angels, and so much more.
There is a tendency for us to be concerned that others might have something better than we have. But when it comes to our faith, our hope, and our life in Jesus Christ, nothing could possibly be better. – Jim MacIntosh
