Then Moab rebelled against Israel after the death of Ahab. 2 Kings 1:1
The book we call Second Kings starts off with the strange tale of the death of King Ahaziah of Israel. The first book of Kings ends by describing how Ahaziah was just as wicked as his father Ahab and was a worshipper of Baal. Because of an accident at home, he was injured and bedridden. It was so bad that he wondered if he would live, and he sent messengers to ask the false god that he worshipped if he would live or die. But the prophet Elijah intercepted the messengers, and sent his own message to Ahaziah. His message was a condemnation of the king’s request to Baal instead of to the God of Israel. And he bluntly told Ahaziah that he would die. And Ahaziah did. His reign lasted only two years. Foolish man!
Elijah told the king that his death was not a result of the accident but of seeking help from the wrong source. We should also be aware that we can suffer in many ways by not trusting our Lord and relying on His Word for our guidance and advice. Think of the times when things went wrong with our plans; many of those times can be traced back to our own foolishness. Consider the words of Proverbs 3:5,6: Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct thy paths.
There is a source of wisdom and direction that will always point us in the right direction. The Word of God is always true. Not only is it always true, but it is always relevant. If we commit our need to our Lord, the Holy Spirit can – and will – provide us with the solution to our need from the Scriptures. The world is filled with sources of information, with guidance and direction that is not based on the Bible. All of these sources are not safe to trust. Not unless they line up with the Word of God.
Elijah’s message to Ahaziah is relevant to us today: why would we even seek help from the world when there is a God Whose help is always the right solution? -Jim MacIntosh
