Christians have a wonderful resource these days in countering the foolishness of evolution. Via the Internet, we can access the resources of several excellent organizations that have assembled research and other information that endorses the Biblical account of creation. One of these that seems to be specially related to parents of school-aged children is Answers in Genesis (answersingenesis.org). Another that is one of my personal favourites because they clearly present the Gospel message as well is the Institute for Creation Research (www.icr.org). This one is heavily criticized by some Christians I know who believe in the so-called gap theory because it so powerfully refutes their old-earth doctrine. No doubt there are other web-based resources as well. For example, this site – voicesforchrist.org/speakers/753?direction=asc&sort=event_date – contains an excellent message by Norman Crawford on this important topic. In addition. a number of Assemblies have excellent material available on their websites. There is really no excuse for Christians with access to the Internet to be ignorant on this topic. And we shouldn’t be ignorant of it, because evolution definitely falls into the category of what our text calls science falsely so called.
Even many Christians believe that science has proved the validity of evolution. Certainly this theory is taught in public schools as proven fact. This is one of the primary reasons why we sent our children to a Christian school, and why many Christian parents today home-school their children. Most science books and just about anything published in magazines treats evolution as a proven fact. But it has never been proven, not can it ever be, despite the concerted efforts of the many opponents of the creation record of the Bible. Check some of the resources mentioned above to confirm this. But evolution is also just one of the false sciences that stand in opposition to the Word of God and the truth of God. Most of modern day philosophy denies the doctrines of Scripture and leads people away from turning to the only source of truth that can help resolve the issues of life. The theory of global warming is also based on lies and false science. Don’t be fooled; there is plenty of evidence that refutes this ridiculous theory, evidence that those who endorse global warming refuse to consider. Why is it important for us as Christians to be informed about the false science that surrounds us? Because these things are in opposition to God and His truth, and they can stumble us and lead us astray with their lies.
Because so many people believe the lie of evolution, they mock those who present the Gospel as old-fashioned and out of step with modern knowledge. This makes it difficult to reach people with the Gospel. It also makes it difficult to reach our children with the Gospel, as they imbibe this lie from their schoolwork, and as parents fail to refute this lie at home. In addition, too many Christians are led astray by so-called specialists who use unscriptural practices and theories in their treatments of psychological disorders.
These are some of the ways in which science falsely so called is harmful, and why Paul warns Timothy – and us – to avoid these oppositions. – Jim MacIntosh
