Sermonette for Saturday

Heaven and earth shall pass away, but My words shall not pass away. Luke 21:33

In our text, the Lord Jesus is making two very important statements: the heavens and the earth are temporary, and the words of the Lord Jesus are eternal. Creation is finite; the Word of God is infinite. What we see today is fleeting; what we cannot see today apart from faith is everlasting. No matter how we consider it, this text presents a sharp contrast that should give us hope and comfort.

Remember who is speaking in today’s text: as He refers to the heavens and the earth passing away, that is, creation. Jesus is the One Who created it. Whether it is the little ball called earth that we as humans have explored and examined at considerable length, or whether it is the vast unexplored regions of our universe and far beyond, all of that which we call creation is finite. We can’t measure it, but given enough time and resources, it is measurable. Eternity is not. Creation had a beginning; not the fuzzy seven or eight billion years of the evolutionist’s reckoning, but a beginning, as recorded in Genesis 1. Evolutionists imagine our own sun will burn out in another five billion years. They are wrong about everything else, so there is no reason to believe they are right about this. But whenever it ends, it and the earth that revolves around it will be gone. Human history will be over, as we find recorded in Revelation 20. So what will remain?

According to the Lord Jesus, His Word will never pass away; it will forever be true and relevant. The Bible that we carry and read is eternal. It can never change, even despite the worst efforts of the modern-language Bible publishers. No scientific or archaeological study has ever proven that anything in our Bibles is inaccurate, although they keep trying. Not one word of that which God has given to us can fail. And that is important to us, because much of what the Lord Jesus spoke of refers to us. He told us of going to prepare a place for us in the eternal Glory, and of coming back to take us to be with Him there (John 14:2,3). Regarding this eternal abode, the apostle Paul described it as being with Christ, which is far better than anything on earth (Philippians 1:23). Regarding our tenure in that place, the same apostle declares that we shall be forever with the Lord (1 Thessalonians 4:17). Regarding our occupation in that place, Ephesians 2:7 reminds us that in the ages to come He (God) might shew the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. Exploring the magnitude and the wonders of the grace of God will make for an exciting and fulfilling eternity!
