Word for Wednesday

For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith, as it is written, the just shall live by faith. Romans 1:17

Day Six of creation was when God produced His masterpiece: man in His image. And God did something for man that He did for no other creature: He breathed into man the breath of life and made of that man a living soul. Mankind is unique among creation. No other creature survives beyond its physical life. Only Adam and his descendants survive beyond the death of the body, because of the eternal soul that God imparted. But that eternal soul that each of us has inherited is subject to the sinful condition that separates us from God in a state of spiritual death. God has provided spiritual life that we can access through the medium of faith. Our text tells us that those who have accessed God’s eternal life through faith are just.

God’s plan of Salvation is amazing, from our standpoint! Redemption, provided through the precious blood of Christ, is freely available to wretched and lost sinners like us. It is not of our doing, it is not of our obtaining, it is not of our merit. God – and God alone – has provided a way for us to be just. By faith – and only by faith – we accept God’s provision. We can’t have it by works, by prayers, by religion, by money, by reasoning, or by any other means. But by faith, we enter into all that God has for us now and forever.

This world can often be harsh and cold to us, because we are still living as sinners in a sinful world. But even in this cruel and painful environment, we have the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, to guide and shelter us. We have the hope of a better tomorrow, the knowledge that, amid all of the ups and downs of life, the last move will be up. We have the blessing of the Word of God as our soul’s nourishment, the knowledge of the Lord’s coming as our comfort, and the companionship of the Lord’s people as our support. Faith is the door that has opened to us these riches. And faith is the door that will unfold to us the riches of Heaven forever.

The just shall live by faith. Aren’t you glad that you are one of the just? Dwelling on this glorious thought will brighten your day! -Jim MacIntosh
