Tidings for Tuesday

After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before His face into every city and place whither He Himself would come. Luke 10:1

Who are these seventy? We know about the disciples, and their roles in the ministry of the Lord Jesus, but very little else is ever said about these seventy. We don’t know their names, where they were from, or how they were assembled. We know only of their mission to tell others that Jesus was coming, and in verse 17 of this chapter, of their joy at the power they were able to access. Maybe you and I can see ourselves as represented in this seventy.

We often think only of the twelve disciples when we consider Jesus’ followers. But in reality, there were many others who were devoted and committed to Jesus. Unknown by name and with little said about them, they were faithful in their own little spheres of life. They conducted themselves according to Jesus’ teachings, and passed on His message to friends, relatives, and neighbours. They were also careful to maintain a good testimony. Their message: Jesus is coming. Do they sound like anybody you know? Take a look in the mirror and see if you are one of the seventy!

Despite their anonymity in terms of the Scriptures, these seventy were all known by the Lord Jesus, and He had a personal interest in and care for them all. What accomplishments they made we can’t tell. But we know they were faithful and willing to serve. And we can be assured that they all have a wonderful reward waiting in a day when they will all be publicly praised and recognized.

You and I often consider ourselves as functioning in relative anonymity, too. We don’t make headlines in the news and we don’t wield any influence in the worlds of politics, power, academia, business, entertainment, technology, or society. We are often relative nobodies even among the Lord’s Assemblies, but serve in our own little places to the best of our abilities. Like the seventy who Jesus sent forth before Him, we do what we are told, tell others around us that Jesus is coming, and appreciate that we will be given a just recompense.

Jesus is still sending forth His seventies today, into a world that still rejects Him but a world where He will someday come and reign in righteousness. Numbered among His seventy are the faithful few like you. Keep telling others that He is coming. -Jim MacIntosh
